The Power of Legacy.
There’s something profound about standing side by side with the people who helped shape you, sharing a moment that captures not just faces but lifetimes of shared stories, sacrifices, and love.
On Saturday I had the honor of being photographed with my mum, Elizabeth, and my two uncles and aunt—Fergus, Gloria, and Richard—who are Hugh and Lily Kelly’s children. Each of them represents a piece of my grandparents’ legacy, a thread woven into the tapestry of our family’s story.
This photograph is more than a keepsake. It’s a symbol of what legacy truly means: the enduring impact of love, determination, and the shared values that ripple through time.
Legacy is often thought of as something rooted in history—an inheritance, a tradition, or a memory. But I’ve come to understand it as something far more alive. Legacy is a living story. It’s not just what is passed down but also how it evolves through those who carry it forward. Hugh and Lily’s lives weren’t just about the family business they built; they were about the values that inspired it: hard work, compassion, creativity, and a deep sense of connection to their community.
Their children—my family—embody these qualities in ways that inspire me every day. My uncle Fergus, for example, took over the family business and ensured its continued growth, honoring the work of his parents while adding his own vision. My mum Elizabeth and my aunt Gloria both carry the kindness and grace of their mother Lily, and my uncle Richard’s resilience reminds me of the quiet strength my grandfather Hugh had.
Growing up in this environment gave me an unwavering sense of support, a safety net that allows me to dream big and take risks. It’s this love and encouragement that inspired me to create Hugh and Lily’s—a brand and marketplace rooted in storytelling and tradition. Every decision I make for this venture is guided by the lessons I’ve learned from my family: to prioritize people, to honor history, and to believe in the beauty of sharing stories.
Stories are how we understand the world and our place in it. My grandparents’ story isn’t just about two people; it’s about the values they instilled and the lives they touched. It’s about the laughter at the dinner table, the hands that built a family business, and the quiet moments of support that went unspoken but never unnoticed.
When I think about my family’s story, I’m reminded that every legacy begins with a single act of love. That’s the heart of Hugh and Lily’s. Through this venture, I hope to celebrate not just the legacy of my grandparents but the countless untold stories waiting to be shared.
As I work to bring Hugh and Lily’s to life, I do so with gratitude for the legacy I’ve inherited and the opportunity to create something that will, I hope, inspire others to honor their own stories.
Let’s celebrate our stories, honor our legacies, and cherish the people who make it all possible.
